Text Of the Greatest Speech Ever Written: From Charles Chaplin’s The Great Dictator

Hynkel: I’m sorry, but I don’t want to be an Emperor – that’s not my business. I don’t want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone, if possible — Jew, gentile, black man, white. We all want to help one another; human beings are like that. We want to live by each other’s happiness, not by each other’s misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another. In this world there’s room for everyone and the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone.

The way of life can be free and beautiful.

But we have lost the way.

Greed has poisoned men’s souls, has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical, our cleverness hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery, we need humanity. More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost.

The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together. The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men, cries out for universal brotherhood for the unity of us all. Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world, millions of despairing men, women, and little children, victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people.

To those who can hear me I say, “Do not despair.” The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed, the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass and dictators die; and the power they took from the people will return to the people and so long as men die, liberty will never perish.

Soldiers: Don’t give yourselves to brutes, men who despise you, enslave you, who regiment your lives, tell you what to do, what to think and what to feel; who drill you, diet you, treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder. Don’t give yourselves to these unnatural men, machine men, with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle! You are men! You have the love of humanity in your hearts. You don’t hate; only the unloved hate, the unloved and the unnatural.

Soldiers: Don’t fight for slavery! Fight for liberty! In the seventeenth chapter of Saint Luke it is written, “the kingdom of God is within man” — not one man, nor a group of men, but in all men, in you, you the people have the power, the power to create machines, the power to create happiness. You the people have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure.

Then, in the name of democracy, let us use that power! Let us all unite!! Let us fight for a new world, a decent world that will give men a chance to work, that will give you the future and old age a security. By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power, but they lie! They do not fulfill their promise; they never will. Dictators free themselves, but they enslave the people!! Now, let us fight to fulfill that promise!! Let us fight to free the world, to do away with national barriers, to do away with greed, with hate and intolerance. Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men’s happiness.

Soldiers: In the name of democracy, let us all unite!!!

Text Of the Greatest Speech Ever Written: From Charles Chaplin’s The Great Dictator

I’ll show you the life of the mind.

I am here in Tennessee. This is where I chose to go. I chose to go to Tennessee to live with my sweetie MARY. AND…
I just finished watching Barton Fink again.
In the end (and this is not a review so I will tell the end). In the end there is Barton on the beach gazing in “real’ life at a women.

He has been looking at this women for some time on a calender

striking the same pose. He has been, the actor has been, the character the actor plays is shown glancing more then once at this calendar hung up over his writing desk, the desk he spent a lot of time at unable to write during most of the film.  He is in a suit awkwardly sitting in the sand with a box next to him which he has never opened.

What is in the box? He doesn’t know. It was given to him by the devil or by his free mind or who the hell knows. I am reminded of a song lyric from a fIREHOSE song called “to the singer of REM” it goes “what’s in the drawer doesn’t tell you about the door”.  Now I hope things are becoming more clear. See I listened to that exact song today!  The stuff in the drawer is some stuff and the stuff on the other side of the door is other stuff.  What does it all mean?
What is symbolism or are leitmotifs?  What is essentially the thing expressed.  It says that or I saw that. Like for example in Barton Fink there are two detectives one has a German Name and one has an Italian name.  Barton Fink is Jewish and so is the head of the studio-His boss-and so is his Agent and so is the Director of the Film he is writing.  Wait a second his boss wants to join the military but can’t and his agent doesn’t understand him and the director gets fired. So obviously we are talking about the holocaust.

Finally.

OK so there are these Jewish people who are God’s chosen or chosen by their God and so they go to the concentration camps and are killed by the millions then they get a piece of land and start liquidated some other people who worship the same God in a revised form.  Ok so now we know exactly where we are. The life of the mind. Ok so you are going to watch that movie and then read the book and then listen to that song all the while you got the life of the mind and all the Jews and the holocaust in there cause I mean shit what is more powerful and now finally you got it -you are all are over it er I am all over it!
So anyway you know that John Goodman(What a Name!!!) is the overwieght actor who couldn’t be anymore likable but then he’s the one you see in the film.  YES he is THE one.  He is marching down the flaming hallway in the hotel where Barton lives and he is screaming “I’ll show you the life of the Mind!!”

oh yeah I’ll show you all right!  Then he kills the detectives and after he says “Hiel Hitler“. So wait it’s getting so clear now. He’s killing the Italian and the German and yelling Hiel Hitler.  But then he’s also known as madman muntz and he’s killing them because they are on to him.  You see he is actually a Serial killer. See now. We have a serial killer who is gonna show you the life of the mind and he’s gonna kill the Nazi cops and set his jewish friend free and then he’s gonna give Barton that box which he never opens.

Wrong Box

Now finally I think we are all on the same page. You see I’m Maurice Arthur FitzGerald and I was in the living room.

I was watching a film. Don’t you see I was thinking about the holocaust. Don’t you see how it all has to do with the meaning and the message and the final summing up. The endpoint. The final solution.
So Barton finally overcomes all the obsticles that are preventing him from writing and THERE he writes the goddamn script and it’s done and it’s hardboiled and —but wait I never saw any wrestling and I never saw anyone get killed and I never even read the script—- but BARTON! there is no wrestling in it. You see you are writing something. You are a writing and you are writing something for an audience that expects a wrestling picture. You see it’s not about the life of the mind it’s about action it’s about wrestling.  Wrestling isn’t about souls it’s about sex. That’s what being human is about just look at your body it’s all about sex.

Barton gets on top of that big sweaty John Goodman after he winks at him and smiles so sweetly and then it’s over and he’s on his back and boy did that hurt. So the picture is actually about sex because that’s what wrestling means. But that’s good that’s what the common man does he has sex and has kids and then there are humans everywhere and that’s it —end of story.
Hold on Ok so there are the two jewish guys who make this film which they also wrote about this Jewish guy who is writing this film about this wrestler. It’s about how the Jewish guy doesn’t seem to connect with the common people don’t ya see. He is told directly by the nice guy Hitler that he DOESN’T LISTEN. You see he lives in his head with all these ideas about the common man but he doesn’t want to actually listen to them.  You see he doesn’t know who the common man is because he isn’t one of them.  He is told in no uncertain terms that he doesn’t have to live in that world. No he can sit in his head and have ideas about things but then…
Ok so there are these millionaire Jewish dudes who make this movie about this pretentious writer who winds up in hollywood and boy is he a fish out of water. Doesn’t know what to do. How is he gonna write this idiotic wrestling picture if he never saw one.  But wait there is the famous writer who is a drunkard and isn’t Jewish no sir.  F. Scott Faulkner O’neill was not a jew boy. But he is the Uber-Genius writer who can’t write anymore because he is always drunk like Jack Kerouac. The writer drinks to escape and has some woman to take care of him. See there is this women character in the film who says she understands him and she is actually the one who wrote his best books and his screenplays and she doesn’t criticize this poor man who is always impotently raging against the vile world out there.
And what does this film mean anyway Mary?  I ask Mary who is a writer and with whom I watched the film-what does it mean? And she says oh it’s about how writing is–or what the people who buy writing, what they want is just some product  just some stupid product to sell to the common man. Some trivial piece of crap genre-fill in the blanks-type of thing.  And that is what Barton Fink is about.
So what is this about?  So there is this guy(ME) who is writing this(this) and he asks this girl who he was lying next to what is this film about?  You know the film that was made by these two jewish guys. This major motion picture produced in Hollywood by these jewish guys who also wrote and directed it. It’s about this jewish guy who needs to write the screenplay for the head of this major studio who also happens to be Jewish.  I’m not Jewish though and neither is the guy who attempts to show Barton the “Life of the mind” and who cleans up Barton’s mess and who is a common man who kills the Nazi’s and Barton’s relatives (when he goes to New York cuz things are getting gummed up at the head office) and cleans up after Barton kills the lady who wrote the novels and the screenplay of the non-Jewish genius writer who drinks all the time cuz he just wants to escape.
Wait. Hold one what am I doing here.  What was the point of the this. I’m an alcoholic writer who isn’t drinking and who moved to Tennessee after he decided what he wanted to do. But then some stuff happened and I couldn’t do anything productive with all the time he had so I was just making these pieces of art that fulfilled the conception I had of the type of thing that people would be impressed by.  I was doing what I thought would impress people.  See Barton Fink gets full of himself sometimes and then the people around him listen to him get high and mighty and then they realize that he doesn’t know what is important– that he is just filled up with concern about himself and he feels a lot of pride in things the common man doesn’t really admire.  See so the Jewish guy is standing there in the middle of the dance floor going on about how HE is A WRITER and he CREATES things and some dude says he want’s his turn dancing with the women Barton was dancing with and Barton doesn’t want him to but then the guy punches him and soon a huge fight breaks out and Barton is on the ground looking at all the feet of the people as they are beating each other up.
It all comes together because no one really knows what is in the box in the end.

there that's the box

You see the common man said it contained all that he held of value but then he said he was lying and perhaps it contains the head of the women who actually wrote all the so called works of genuis which I guess weren’t really works of genius because they were written by the jaded lady who really “understands” the drunk and writes what people want the writer to write.  See she writes what she thinks or knows is expected of the genuis writer be it genre or masterpiece novel.
And so now that I’ve tied up all the loose ends I am finished with what I started.  I am finished writing something written for nobody to fulfill nothing.  And it means the same thing. It just deferred it in some other metaphorical allegory symbol. And the bow can’t be placed on the package yet because it was never filled and NO ONE ever knew what was in it.
THE END.

I’ll show you the life of the mind.

what does “evil” mean?

Ants and Cicada
Ants and Cicada

The word evil refers to the idea some people entertain that there is some extra-human type of force that guides humanity to act in a manner that harms other people. Strange as it may seem the closest man can get to being evil is to believe that there is an evil force.  If one believes there is evil then a few things happen. One may informally observe that the people who fervently believe in evil are the same ones who override the natural voice one hears when listening to ones inner voice, since they believe in evil they can doubt their conscious and do horrible and seemingly inhuman thing to other people.  The belief or ideology overrides the natural inclinations to get along with other people and be kind to them.  The “do unto others” concept resonates so well because it is in accord with ones natural inclinations.  However as a practical matter since the Christians and the Jews and many other religious freaks put an Ideology ahead of a inner knowledge of what one should do they essentially are the evil they profess to believe in and oppose.  They do willful and terrible things to other people and believe that’s what some transcendent being who reasons are inscrutable wants them to do.  They proceed to bring what is essentially the doing or harmful things to other people without feeling bad about it.

For example people believe in the ideology of democracy and therefore submit to the power of the state thinking this is the right thing to do. For example every American who dutifully pays their taxes is actually funding the murder of other people.  They can’t bring themselves to override the ideology with their own sense of justice.

I hope god wipes them er us off the face of the earth.

Americans who fund and support torture

unwittingly are perhaps less to blame.
